Moldovan Orphan Art Exhibit in USA

Posted by ghenador on November 18, 2011

Moldova Orphanage Art ExhibitionNew Moon Cafe is hosting an exhibit of the artwork of Moldovan orphans from November 14th – December 5th, 2011.
Moldova, a former Soviet Republic, is today the poorest country in Europe. Following the collapse of Communism the economic and social infrastructure of the country crumbled, and the resulting vacuum was filled with corruption, lawlessness and despair. In the ensuing years 25% of the population left the country seeking work. Many thousands of children were left behind, either with other family members who could not provide for them or they were simply abandoned. These kids find themselves on the street, or dumped into government run orphanages.
Total funding for the orphanages is the equivalent of about $1 per child per day. As a result, programs and services are severely limited and conditions are marginal at best.
The fate that awaits these children when they reach the age of 16 is horrific. At 16, they must leave the orphanages and often fall prey to traffickers who sell them as sex slaves.

ARS DOR under the direction of Ghenadie Sontu, is an organization that regularly visits the orphanages providing art classes as a vehicle for the children to express what is in their hearts ~ the rejection, abandonment and loss they have experienced. In the process of exercising newly found creative gifts, the orphans begin to discover their identity, as precious and valued.

Moldova Orphanages Art Exhibition ARS DOR 150 Cherry St.Art therapy is a respected and effective method for dealing with childhood trauma. In the creative environment of art classes, leaders assess the psychological state of the children and work to build a sense of identity as well as hope and a future.

An exuberant display of the artwork of these children is on display at New Moon. 150 Cherry Street Inc. is sponsoring this awareness and fundraising event for the benefit of ARS DOR and the orphans of Moldova. If you are interested to learn more about this program please contact michaelbeer@150cherryst.org.

Visual distress

Posted by ghenador on August 2, 2011

Reviewing art fairs did not produce flattering news about east Europe . This time we re-visited Artfacts to see whether contemporary and modern visual artists from our region have improved their dismal position. Alas, on the contrary. In 2009 there were 18 living artists from east Europe , now 16 from practically the same ten countries (instead of Ukraine Bosnia was the 10th country then). This time only one of them, US-based Serbia-born Marina Abramovic is in top 100.

The ArtfactsNet rank list, based on the number, place and reception of exhibitions, has swelled to comprise over 218 thousand artists of the world, the majority of them alive. In order to check progress after a couple of years, here is a benchmark table:

ArtfactsNet rank list
July 2011

Visual alternatives

We sought consolation in alternative rank lists. Kunstkompass exists since 1970, now administered by the German business magazines Manager. Importance and influence of the artists is measured by exhibitions, museum purchases and also art magazine reviews.

London based art watch ArtTactic ranks artists by “confidence”, distinguishing long-term and short-term, based on the opinion of a pool of art insiders.

In both cases access to the full top 100 list requires membership which BO is not. In the available press references no mention is ever made of any artist from east Europe .

Go positivist

Entirely different and fully objective is the approach of Artprice report on contemporary art sales released each year for FIAC (so the next edition is due in October). It operates with clear facts: revenues at auctions. Also contempariness is defined unambiguously: born after 1945, whether alive or dead. The analysis of the season between July 2009 – June 2010 is an entertaining and informative read. Its tone contradicts the apocalyptic vision of the crisis: “Unlike the 1990-1991 crisis when there was a serious freeze on art buying, the offer has adapted during 2008 and 2010 to the less favourable economic context. The market is just as deep as ever and is continuing its expansion, particularly towards the East.”

This east, however is not our east. If we disregard a nostalgic reference to Malevitch, the first name from east Europe occurs on page 65: Enki Bilal, 74th on the top 500 list was born in Belgrade . The €888 thousand turnover after his works consists of 271 pieces: no other artist sold more lots on the list. The only other name from our region is Romanian sculptor Remus Botarro, #451.

To extend the scope to the broader region, we find two Russians, a Georgian, a Greek – and eighteen Turks! Similarly astounding is the number of 139 Chinese artists on the top 500 of sales. 139 Chinese versus five from post-communist Europe !

The bestselling artist in 2009-2010, by the way, was Jean-Michel Basquiat, dead since 1988, with €31 million for 70 pieces. The highest single price for a lot belongs to a painting by Peter Doig, €6 million.

Rounding with a square

We shall round up the excursion to contemporary visual arts with a combined table of the tops of the latest leading rank lists (living artists only):

CAROL SCHMIDT PRIMARUL CARE A ADUS ÎN CHIŞINĂU ELECTRICITATEA, PAVAJUL ŞI TRAMVAIUL

Posted by ghenador on June 17, 2011

(I. Colesnic, „Basarabia necunoscută”, v.

(I. Colesnic, „Basarabia necunoscută”, v. VI, ed.”Museum”, 2005).old Chisinau paintings, chisinaul vechi Ghenadie Sontu

Posted by ghenador on April 11, 2011

Art Exhibition Hosted by the Swiss Cooperation Office at Chisinau

Posted by ghenador on March 23, 2011

Eurointegration through Art Ars DorThe international art exhibition ”Eurointegration through Art” is hosted by the Swiss Cooperation Office in Chisinau at its premises on Mateevici Street, 23, in the period of March-April 2011. The exposition features oil paintings of young artists from Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, Georgia and Letonia who share their artistic vision regarding the importance of culture in the process of European integration.

“I consider that Eurointegration can take place only by knowing and valuing the culture of every European nation, seen through the historical prism, studied separately and in comparison with other European cultures that together form an integral cultural monolith,” said Vlad Lozovanu, one of those 21 artists involved in the project as an ambassador of Eurointegration through art.

Ars Dor Association launched the International Art Project “Eurointegration through Art” in 2006 with support from the International Fund for Promotion of Culture (IFPC) of UNESCO.

Posted by ghenador on September 17, 2010

Eurointegration through Art

Eurointegrare prin Arta – 2010

Posted by ghenador on September 12, 2010

Artistii, muzicienii, poetii, scriitorii, regizorii, actorii si intelectualii europeni ar putea construi poduri intre tarile Europei, intre natiuni si culturi, incurajind interactiunea si dialogul cultural intre ele.

Ghenadie Sontu, Chisinau, Moldova

European artists, musicians, writers, poets, film-makers, actors, academicians ARS DOR Eurointegration through Artand intellectuals are Ambassadors of culture, who can build bridges between European countries, people and cultures by encouraging and enhancing dialogue and interaction between them, more successfully than politicians. Artists from the countries in the process of European integration should not wait until their countries will be integrated in the EU politically and economically – they should do it through culture and do it right now. Europe is created – now it is necessary to create Europeans. Countries that aspire for European integration should not wait until Europe will come to their borders – they should move forward and become really European. This process has already started, and it is only a question of time when culture and art will become essential components of European integration.

ARS DOR Association with the support of the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture (UNESCO) launches the International Project “Eurointegration through Art” that has mission to contribute through art to the process of European integration. Artists from Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, Latvia and Georgia were selected to become Ambassadors for Eurointegration through art and to express their vision on importance of culture and the role of artist in the process of European integration. Objectives of the International Project “Eurointegration through Art” are: to explore the cultural dimension of the European integration; to explore cultural perspectives of EU enlargement; to define role of artist in the process of European integration.

Integration of new member states in the EU poses several questions: how it will affect culture of the EU neighboring states? Will countries neighboring the EU become isolated from cultural development in EU? New borders of the enlarged European Union should not neglect past and ongoing regional cultural cooperation or cooperation with neighboring countries.

Culture is the true European identity power. In this context the major role of the European artists is to promote through art cultural diversity and preserve common values of Europe.
Intercultural dialogue through art is an important instrument which could facilitate the integration of new countries in the European Union. In this dialogue artists must convince governments and politicians that there is a need in cultural renaissance across Europe. If politicians of European countries will understand this, European integration will not be limited by economic, political, security and other reasons.
It is important to inspire people living in the European Union to actively get in touch with other cultures, both at home and abroad, and thus to contribute to tolerance and mutual respect which are conditions for existence of Europe.

ARS DOR Eurointegration through ArtAndrei Gamarti, Chisinau, Moldova
Art is not a means – art is a space in which everything is possible, in which different times, subjects and objects, sometimes divergent, coexist. And not just coexist, but communicate and create values.
At the moment Eurointegration is a socio-political objective of many east-Europeans states, which in the result of some sad historical realities were torn away from this space of values. The Project “Eurointegration through art” has objective to promote a different European integration – through art, culture, tolerance, initiating a dialogue among nations, among various artistic expressions, a real dialog among real people. And all these demonstrate that Eurointegration through art is not only possible, but, although it may seem strange, already has been taking place for a long time. It is necessary just to understand and to recall this truth every day.

Constantin Severin, Suceava, Romania
The Project “Eurointegration through art” is an excellent exercise ARS DOR Eurointegration through Artof freedom, communication and love. Culture communicates in the language of heart, which is understood by everybody. The huge European Union should be conquered by beauty, harmony, faith, truth, transparency, tolerance and love. Artists who promote these values, overcoming any limits, borders and misunderstandings, worth wearing the title of the Ambassador of Eurointegration through Art.

Domnita Vieru, Chisinau, Moldova
For artists, communication is essential – both with the audience – the art consumer, and with representatives of national and international art groups. Thanks to participation in the project “Eurointegration through art” I had opportunity to find out, decipher and learn about mystery of the rich centuries-old and transcendental European culture. But at the same time I am proud to become an Ambassador of Eurointegration through art – a promoter of the culture that I represent, in a new space. Thus, I got confirmation of the hypothesis that the art brings nearer people, nations, states and continents.

Natalia Prodanciuc, Lvov, Ukraine
ARS DOR Eurointegration through ArtIn my art I am influenced by Tripoli culture, which is very rich in its symbols, ornaments and internal meaning. The atmosphere of old ages plays an important role in the modern art, enriching it. Through my art I make connection between the art of previous centuries and the contemporary European art. Tripoli culture was spread over large territories in Europe, among which Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and many other European countries. While being in Moldova I saw the proofs that Moldova also enters in Tripoli cultural space.
I consider culture to be an important aspect of each country and the governments should support culture preservation and development. Culture unites European nations. I participated in the Project “Eurointegration through art” with hope to contribute to this process.

George Areshidze, Tbilisy, Georgia
Eurointegration is a process that can not be stopped and that will continue to take place. ARS DOR Eurointegration through ArtThe culture plays an important role of the mediator in this process. Cultures of the European countries represent huge treasure that should be admired, but at the same time approached very carefully, given the fact that these national cultures are fragile.

Laurentiu Dimisca, Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Visual art is an excellent means of communication which is understood by all nations. It does not have race and can not be stopped by the borders. An artist can represent through his art the whole nation and can create an image of the nation. During the Project “Eurointegration through art” I though of a day, when the European Union will have so many member-countries, that the yellow colour will dominate on the flag of Europe.

Daniel Tufis, Sibiu, Romania
In my works I used European symbol of the “Universal Tree”, a symbol of the centre of the universe, a primordial ARS DOR Eurointegration through Artarchetype that generates networks (ramifications) and which can be associated with the European construction that currently takes place.

Vlad Lozovanu, Chisinau, Moldova
I consider that Eurointegration can take place only by knowing and valuing culture of every European nation, seen through the historical prism, studied separately and in comparison with other European cultures that together form integral cultural monolith.

Andrei Chepurko, Nikolaev, Ukraine
Namely culture can unite European countries – countries with rich cultural heritage and huge potential in developing art. But in order to have such a development, artists should communicate, exchange their ideas and unite ARS DOR Eurointegration through Arttheir efforts. Internet contributes to the process of Eurointegration through art, by offering artists new opportunities to exhibit their artworks and to see works of other artists. It also allows to communicate with many artists, what would be more difficult in the real world.

Ioan Cotofan, Suceava, Romania
I see eurointegration through art as an effort to preserve and to promote national values of the European countries. I believe that visual artists, along with musicians, poets/writers and other people of art should contribute to this process.

Robert Andersen, Chisinau, Moldova
In my opinion, Eurointegration means first of all, change in quality of life, both economic and cultural. At the same time Eurointegration through art means exchange of cultural experience and acquaintance with cultural heritage of the countries-members of the European Union.

Iren Rubel, Odessa, Ukraine
During the Project “Eurointegration through art” artists from five countries worked on presenting to large audience their message about Eurointegration. This work lead us to a deeper understanding of cultures of other European countries and to respect them. I consider that namely common exhibitions, communication and other cultural events will contribute to success of Eurointegration. I hope that we succeeded to be the messengers of the idea of “Eurointegration” and that the common exhibition “Eurointegration through art” gave food for though for many people who saw it!Adrian

Moraru, Chisinau, Moldova
As Ambassadors of Eurointegration through art, during the Project we were involved in search for truth and beauty. Although we represented different countries, we spoke the same language – that of culture. Our common message to all is the message of peace, friendship and mutual respect of different European nations and cultures.

Ilgvars Zalans, Valmiera, Latvia

As an artist, I look for possibilities to be involved in the process of ARS DOR Eurointegration through Artconsolidation of different countries in common Europe. Eurointegration through art is an excellent way for any European country to situate itself in the cultural space of Europe. Culture and art are those elements that can consolidate diverse and sometimes controversial nations in Europe. Exactly and mainly thanks to culture any country of the new Europe will be able to preserve its existence in the world process of globalisation.

Svetlana Tymkiv, Lvov, Ukraina
The process of Eurointegration includes, besides political and economic, the cultural aspects. Today, while creating a new Europe, in parallel with economic support provided to the neighbouring and aspiring countries, it is necessary to pay attention to their culture, for example, to organise various common cultural events. I think that only by learning, knowing and respecting traditions of other nations and by extending the common cultural space it is possible to create powerful network of countries in Europe.

Iulia Petrenko, Nejin, Ukraina
I think that all nations of the world are connected through their cultures. And this is especially true for the European nations which have common historical roots. That is why all European countries have to make steps toward their common goal – Eurointegration. People of art have a special place in this process. Their role is similar to that of diplomats – it consists in demonstrating through culture the ideals of the whole humanity and in bringing culture closer to the society.

Discovering Talents in Moldova Orphanages

Posted by ghenador on March 25, 2010

“The process of drawing, painting, or constructing is a complex one in which children bring together diverse elements of their experience to make a new and meaningful whole. In the process of selecting, interpreting, and reforming these elements, children have given us more than a picture or sculpture; they have given us part of themselves: how they think, feel and see”. (Lowenfeld)

Art is of vital importance to children. It is one way in which a small child can interact with, and understand his environment. This enables him perhaps to participate more fully in the complex and often confusing adult world. The involvement of a child in art is a very individual and personal experience. It provides the child with an opportunity to create and to see the product of her creation. Art can be a means of self-expression and communication with others and can also be a very personal interaction between the self and the art medium. The former may help the child to feel her own worth, know greater self-esteem and begin to understand her world.

in 2010 ARS DOR Association started the project “Discovering Talents in Moldova Orphanages”.

The goal of the project is: identification, development and promotion of talented children and youth from the orphanages from Moldova.

The mission of ARS DOR Association in this art project is to mobilize resources and energy investing in art education of children in Moldova orphanages, provide supportive services to children, and advocacy in the community around talented children.

Objectives:

  • Discovering new talents.
  • Developing abilities and affirmation of talented children through visual art.
  • Publishing a book with children’s paintings and essays about them.
  • Social assistance through material and psychological support of talented children whose material, cultural, family, etc. situation is difficult.
  • Transfer of educational experience and talent promotion.
  • Collaboration with orphanages – work in partnership.

At this moment among beneficiaries are about 110 children from 3 orphanages from Moldova involved in the project.

In present, approx. 20 Th. children from the Republic of Moldova are placed in 63 boarding-houses and orphanages. More than half of them (64%) have both parents alive. Due to the massive migration of population abroad, more than 90 Th. children in Moldova find themselves without parents care. Social, political and economic situation in the country directly and indirectly influences present and future of these children, who automatically become vulnerable, and can be easily influenced later by other society problems.

ARS DOR Association is aware that in these institutions exists a considerable number of talented children from different areas with unvalued potential. Their identification can be possible through organizing art workshops in these institutions. Developing and promoting these talents may contribute to their socializing and inclusion in the society, getting self-trust, and later may determine their professional choice in life.

ARS DOR Association has work experience with 12 orphanages from Chisinau, capital of Moldova, involving 3000 of children in the areas such as fine arts, graffiti, knitting, ceramics, application, etc, and will implement the project.

Eurointegration through Art

Posted by ghenador on November 12, 2008

Eurointegration through Art

Eurointegration through Art

European artists, musicians, writers, poets, film-makers, actors, academicians and intellectuals are Ambassadors of culture, who can build bridges between European countries, people and cultures by encouraging and enhancing dialogue and interaction between them, more successfully than politicians.
